New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan a major initiative to make agriculture the foundation of a developed India. He urged farmers to see this campaign not as a routine government scheme but as a mission of national service. He encouraged them to ask questions and have meaningful discussions with the scientists who will visit their villages as part of the campaign.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of creating new sources of income for farmers. He gave examples like setting up solar panels on farm boundaries, taking part in beekeeping under the country’s growing sweet revolution, and generating energy from agricultural waste. He said many farmers don’t realize the hidden value in crop remains, and under this campaign, they must be guided on how to convert waste into wealth.

PM Modi also spoke about the GOBARdhan Yojana, through which even livestock that no longer produce milk are now becoming income sources. He added that every region must explore which millet varieties (Shree Anna) are best suited to its land and how to increase the value of farm produce through processing.
He said that the government has been working for more than a decade to make agriculture modern, climate-friendly, and economically strong. He said the central focus has been on making sure farmers get the right price for their produce, growing crops that match the country’s needs, and transforming India into a global food supplier. Challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and soil damage caused by chemicals also need to be addressed with better practices and technology.
PM Modi praised the work of agricultural scientists and progressive farmers who, through their experiments, have raised productivity and brought innovation to the sector. However, he said that successful research and stories of such farmers need to reach others more effectively. With the launch of this new campaign, he believes there will now be more opportunities to spread this knowledge across the country.
He also pointed out that changing markets and shifting consumer preferences demand a change in the entire agriculture system. He said this campaign is an effort to bring scientists and farmers together and make sure scientific developments reach the ground, right where the crops grow. The ‘lab to land’ drive, according to him, will help modernize farming and bring India closer to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
