Kedarnath: The much-awaited Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra 2025 reached a sacred milestone today, May 2, with the grand opening of the eleventh Jyotirlinga Shri Kedarnath Dham. Amidst the chanting of “Om Namah Shivay”, devotional hymns, and the powerful resonance of the army band, the temple’s doors opened at 7 a.m., marking the beginning of this year’s pilgrimage.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami graced the occasion, witnessing the divine moment alongside over 12,000 devotees gathered to seek blessings at this revered Himalayan shrine.
Auspicious opening of the temple
The temple doors were opened following elaborate rituals performed during the auspicious period of Baishakh month. The process began at 5 a.m., as Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) officials, pilgrimage priests, and religious gurus has initiated invocations to deities, culminating in the grand opening at sunrise. As per tradition, the first puja was performed on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a gesture emphasizing spiritual unity and devotion at this sacred site.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, deeply involved in the rituals, expressed his joy and extended heartfelt wishes to pilgrims from India and abroad. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring smooth travel facilities for devotees undertaking the Char Dham journey. Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj also extended his best wishes through an official message, acknowledging the spiritual significance and logistical efforts behind the temple opening.
Temple adorned with 108 quintals of flowers
The Kedarnath temple complex has been transformed into a vivid spectacle of devotion, adorned with 108 quintals of flowers sourced from Rishikesh and Gujarat. The vibrant floral arrangements have infused the temple with a divine aura, enhancing the spiritual experience for pilgrims arriving in large numbers. Adding to the preparations, food stalls have been set up to serve devotees, ensuring their well-being during the arduous journey.
Weather conditions were favourable
The weather conditions in Kedarnath have remained generally clear, although snow-covered peaks in the background offer breathtaking views. The district administration, alongside security forces, disaster relief teams, and medical staff, has ensured seamless arrangements, focusing on safety, cleanliness, and traffic management in the temple precincts.
Shri Bhairavnath temple door opening on May 3
According to BKTC media in-charge Dr. Harish Gaur, the doors of Shri Bhairavnath Ji will be ceremoniously opened in Kedarnath Dham on May 3, continuing the cycle of sacred events in the valley. Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing for the upcoming opening of Shri Badrinath Dham on May 4 at 6 a.m., completing the Char Dham circuit.
