New Delhi: A shocking incident has come to light from Karnataka, where a 21-year-old man died after consuming five bottles of undiluted liquor over a Rs 10,000 bet with his friends.
Karthik told his friends — Venkata Reddy, Subramani, and three others — that he could drink five full bottles of liquor without mixing the alcohol with water. In response, Venkata Reddy promised to give him Rs 10,000 if he could do that.
Karthik gulped down five bottles of liquor neat. However, he became seriously ill after consuming the undiluted alcohol. He was taken to a hospital at Mulbagal in Kolar district, where he passed away during treatment. Karthik had been married for a year, and his wife had given birth to their child just eight days back.
Police have registered a case at Nangali police station against six persons, including Venkata Reddy and Subramani. Both have been taken into police custody. The hunt is on for the other accused.
According to the World Health Organisation, alcohol consumption causes almost 2.6 million deaths annually, accounting for 4.7% of all global fatalities. There is no “safe” level of alcohol consumption, as per WHO. To determine a ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption, reliable scientific evidence must show that there is no risk of illness or injury at or below a specific level of intake.
A 2023 report pointed out that there were no studies that can show the potential beneficial effects of light and moderate drinking on cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes outweigh the cancer risk associated with these same levels of alcohol consumption for individual consumers.
