New Delhi: The Indian Navy is set to receive another powerful warship soon. According to sources, a new Talwar-class frigate named INS Tamal will be handed over by Russia to India on May 28, 2025. The ship has been built at Russia’s Yantar Shipyard and is part of a 2016 agreement under which four warships are to be constructed — two in Russia and two in India.
As part of this project, two frigates are being built in Russia and two in India. INS Tamal will be formally inducted into the Indian Navy in June 2025. INS Tamal is a modern guided missile stealth frigate capable of launching attacks simultaneously from air, sea, and surface. It will be equipped with the BrahMos anti-ship missile and advanced sensors and weapon systems.
INS Tamal is considered to be India’s last imported warship, as the country now focuses on designing and manufacturing its warships indigenously. Signed in 2016, Project 1135.6 involves the construction of four Talwar-class warships. INS Tamal is the second ship built in Russia under this series. This new addition to the Indian Navy will not only enhance its naval strength but also bolster the country’s maritime strategy.
