India’s largest battery storage project to be launched in Bihar’s Kajra

Patna: Bihar is set to achieve a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector with the launch of two solar energy projects in Kajra, Lakhisarai district. These projects, with a combined capacity of 301 MW, are expected to commence operations between July and August. Notably, the initiative includes the country’s largest battery storage system of 495 MWh, designed to store solar energy and ensure a stable electricity supply during peak hours, particularly at night. This development is expected to significantly alleviate power shortages in the region.

Following approval from the state cabinet, the tender for the project has been issued. Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding this ambitious renewable energy initiative. He emphasized that, under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar has made remarkable strides in the energy sector. With this project, the state is taking a decisive step toward increasing renewable energy capacity, enhancing environmental sustainability, and ensuring long-term energy security.

Upon completion, the Kajra solar project will not only add 301 MW of clean energy to Bihar’s power grid but will also establish India’s largest battery energy storage system (495 MWh). This advanced storage capacity will enable uninterrupted, high-quality electricity supply, benefiting households and industries alike. Additionally, it will contribute to fulfilling Renewable Energy Obligations (REO) and play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, thereby supporting global climate action efforts.

The project is being developed in two phases:

Phase 1: A 185 MW solar power generation facility will be constructed alongside a 254 MWh battery energy storage system.
Phase 2: An additional 116 MW of solar power capacity will be developed, accompanied by a 241 MWh battery energy storage system.

With this initiative, Bihar will emerge as a leader in state-of-the-art battery storage technology, ensuring reliable and cost-effective power supply even during peak demand periods. The project will also help reduce the state’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels, further strengthening Bihar’s green energy transition.

The total cost of the expansion project stands at ₹1,055.72 crore, while the overall Kajra Solar Power Project is valued at ₹1,810.34 crore. Both projects are being implemented under an 80:20 financial model, where 80% of the funding is sourced from financial institutions and 20% is invested as capital.

To facilitate the project, 1,232 acres of land have already been acquired. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been entrusted with implementing Phase 1, and work is progressing rapidly, with completion expected within this year.

Beyond enhancing Bihar’s energy security, the Kajra Solar Power Project will generate substantial employment opportunities. The construction, maintenance, and operation of the project will create jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers, thereby boosting the local economy.

These landmark solar energy projects will be instrumental in promoting Bihar’s Jal Jeevan Hariyali initiative, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation. As Bihar moves toward greater self-reliance in renewable energy, the state is poised to become a key player in India’s green energy revolution.
