Addis Ababa: A multi-party Parliamentary delegation from India reached Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on Saturday. The Indian delegation led by NCP(SP) MP, Supriya Sule is in the country to give a message against terrorism to the world. It is a short but important visit, which comes at the backdrop of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 innocent lives, including one Nepal national. The attack in Pahalgam marked the highest number of civilian casualties in a terror attack in India, since the 2008 Mumbai attack.
Attempt to provoke communal discord: India on Pahalgam attack
India views this attack on civilians as an attempt to fan communal discord and spread disharmony between communities in the country. It is also an attempt to distort the country’s image globally, said India. India issued a firm yet measured response to the Pahalgam attack, in the form of Operation Sindoor, which were missile strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan on the intervening night of May 6-7, 2025.
Apart from the missile strikes on Pakistan, India has also launched a global outreach involving 07 multi-party Parliamentary delegations visiting 32 countries. The mission: to communicate India’s policy of ‘Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism’ and garner international consensus and cooperation.
The delegation led by Sule is currently in Ethiopia for 3 days. They will engage with the Ethiopian leadership, media, civil society, academia, and the Indian diaspora to exchange views and strengthen bilateral understanding. On the first day the delegation held a key meeting with Hailemariam Dessalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
During the meeting, Hailemariam, who played a vital role in past India-Africa Forum Summits, expressed his condolences for the victims of the Pahalgam attack and drew parallels with ongoing terrorism in the Horn and Sahel regions of Africa. He reaffirmed support for India’s stance and emphasized building a regional and global consensus against terrorism.
Sule and other MPs, who are part of the delegation, echoed India’s firm stance on ‘zero tolerance against terrorism’ and reaffirmed India’s commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
