New Delhi: After India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, the situation on the ground turned serious, and online, even more chaotic. Within hours of the missile strikes on nine terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a different kind of war began raging on social media.
Across Twitter (X), Telegram, and Facebook, grainy videos started surfacing — fighter jets blown out of the sky, explosions lighting up the night, missiles crashing into bases. But here’s the thing: most of it is fake. A lot of what people are watching and forwarding is actually gameplay footage from titles like ARMA 3, Battlefield 3, and Call of Duty. These games have near-cinematic graphics, and with mods and no HUD (heads-up display), they’re hard to distinguish from real war footage. And that’s exactly what makes them perfect fodder for misinformation.
