New Delhi: Congress national president and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him once again to convene a special session of Parliament.
The letter, dated May 11, reiterated the Opposition’s unanimous demand to discuss the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India’s military response under ‘Operation Sindoor’, and the series of ceasefire announcements — first from Washington DC, and later from the governments of India and Pakistan.
In the letter, Kharge reminded the Prime Minister that both he and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha had already written on April 28, requesting a special session following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
Kharge said the matter has become even more urgent given the fast-developing security and diplomatic situation between India and Pakistan. “In view of latest developments, Leader of Opposition Lok Sabha has already written to you again conveying the unanimous request of all Opposition parties for a special session,” he wrote.
The aim of this special session, Kharge said, is to give Parliament an opportunity to discuss three key issues — the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, the Indian military’s targeted response through Operation Sindoor, and the international and bilateral ceasefire declarations that followed.
“As Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, I am writing in support of this request,” Kharge added. He concluded by expressing confidence that the Prime Minister would consider the request seriously and allow for this important national discussion in both Houses.
