Goa stampede: BJP says PMO monitoring situation, Opposition demands probe

Panaji: A stampede in Goa left at least 6 dead and 30 injured. The Prime Minister’s Office is personally monitoring the situation post the tragedy, said BJP’s Goa unit president Damodar Naik. The stampede was reported from the Lairai Devi Temple.

At least 6 people died and 30 were injured after a stampede broke out during the annual festival at Sree Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgao village of North Goa in the wee hours of Saturday. Naik told reporters outside the Goa Medical College and Hospital that 6 people admitted to the facility were in critical condition.

PM Narendra Modi spoke to the state’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant following the stampede, said the BJP leader. According to Naik, the PM assured all possible help from the Centre to the state, following the tragedy. The PMO is closely monitoring the situation, he added.

Following the tragedy PM Narendra Modi took to X to condole loss of lives in the stampede. He wrote, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected.”

Apart from the PM, the President also expressed grief at the loss of lives in the stampede. President Droupadi Murmu said, “Sad to know about the unfortunate incident of a stampede in Shirgao, Goa which claimed several lives. I extend my condolences to bereaved family members and pray for quick recovery of the injured.”

Opposition demands probe

Following the tragic stampede in Goa, the Opposition parties demanded that a thorough probe be conducted in the matter. The Congress party condoled the incident and demanded that proper medical and financial assistance should be provided to the victims.

oa Pradesh Congress Committee in-charge, Amarnath Panjikar said that his party stands in solidarity with the victims of the stampede, the devotees who had come to attend the festival and the entire community of Shirgao.He said that the government must ensure adequate safety, crowd management, and emergency response measures, so that no further tragedy happens during the coming days of the festival.

The All India Trinamool Congress demanded that the government order a thorough probe in the matter. They said that the need was to fix responsibility for such a tragedy and then take appropriate action.

Trinamool Congress leader Trajano D’Mello extended sympathy to the victims’ families, on behalf of his party. Quoting eyewitnesses he said that the stampede occurred due to the negligence of the law and order machinery.
