Shahjahanpur: Panic gripped the Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil Autonomous State Medical College in Shahjahanpur after a gas leak was reported from the operation theatre in the trauma centre on Saturday. The incident led to a chaotic evacuation of patients, as many began experiencing breathing difficulties and a burning sensation in their eyes.
According to eyewitnesses, the leak caused widespread confusion as attendants rushed to carry their loved ones out of the wards. Patients admitted to various departments were seen being wheeled out or carried in arms amid fears of exposure to the leaked substance.
Fire brigade teams were immediately dispatched to the medical college after the leak was reported. The situation was brought under control shortly afterward.
Dr Rajesh Kumar, the principal of the medical college, confirmed that the gas leak originated from the operation theatre and was linked to the strong odor of permalin, a chemical used in medical settings. He clarified that the discomfort caused was due to the smell and not any toxic exposure.
“One critically ill patient died, but it was due to their medical condition and not the gas leak,” Dr. Kumar stated, urging people not to spread or believe in rumors. “The situation is under control now. Patients are being shifted back inside after proper ventilation,” he added.
The incident occurred within the Kotwali police station area and is being looked into by the local authorities.
