Five days of ‘extreme rainfall’: IMD sounds red alert in Maharashtra, Mumbai | Check weather forecast

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern forecast, predicting “extremely heavy to very heavy” rainfall across several districts of Maharashtra for the next five days, putting authorities and residents on high alert.

The impending downpour signals the intensifying grip of the monsoon over the region.

An ‘orange alert,’ signifying the need for preparedness and potential relief action, has been specifically issued for the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. This warning also extends to the ghat (hilly) areas of Satara and Pune districts, along with Kolhapur.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph at isolated places” were very likely,” the IMD said in a statement.

For Raigad, this alert is valid for today only, while for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and the ghat sections of Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune, the ‘orange alert’ remains in effect for a full five days. The IMD warns of “heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph at isolated places” across these regions.

Meanwhile, Mumbai itself was battered by heavy rains late on Sunday, leading the IMD to immediately issue red and orange alerts for various parts of the bustling city and its suburbs.

A ‘yellow alert,’ prompting “warning” and “take action” advice, has been put in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and several other districts across the state, indicating potentially significant rainfall

The deluge resulted in waterlogging that disrupted traffic in several areas. As Monday dawned, the city remained under a red alert for eight of its weather stations, including Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Mulund, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, and Alibag, signifying expectations of “extremely heavy rainfall.” Neighboring Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan are under an ‘orange alert,’ bracing for very heavy rain.

In an early Monday update on X, the IMD indicated that “light to moderate spell of rainfall is likely to continue over Mumbai and suburban areas during next 3-4 hours.” The overall forecast for Mumbai on Monday included a generally cloudy sky with expectations of heavy rainfall, with temperatures predicted to range between a minimum of 24 degree Celsius and a maximum of 31 degree Celsius.
