Delhi High Court closes plea seeking permission for Sonam Wangchuk, others to protest

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (October 22) closed a plea filed by Apex Body Leh seeking permission for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and others to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital after it was informed that the petitioner did not wish to press the plea.

The counsel representing the petitioner Apex Body Leh told a bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma that it did not wish the press the petition as the protest stood withdrawn after a discussion with the authorities concerned.

Fast has also been withdrawn by Wangchuk, SG Mehta told High Court

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Delhi Police, told the bench that the fast has also been withdrawn by Wangchuk and, therefore, the petition might not survive.

The bench, while recording the submissions by parties, said, “Petition is dismissed as withdrawn.”

High Court earlier sought Delhi Police’s response on plea by Apex Body Leh

The High Court earlier had on October 9 directed the Delhi Police to respond to the plea by Apex Body Leh seeking permission to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.

Wangchuk was sitting on an indefinite fast at Ladakh Bhawan in the national capital since October 6 and he ended his fast on Monday evening after an assurance from the home ministry that the talks on demands of Ladakh will resume in December.

Wangchuk, others had marched to Delhi to demand Ladakh’s inclusion under Sixth Schedule of Constitution

Wangchuk and others had marched from Ladakh to Delhi to demand the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The Delhi Police had detained them at the Singhu border and later they were released on the night of October 2.

The march was organised by the Apex Body Leh, which has been spearheading an agitation along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA),for last four years to demand statehood for Ladakh, its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, early recruitment process along with a public service commission for Ladakh and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts.
