The incident took place when the inspector and the constable stopped a Royal Enfield motorcycle as the vehicle was making excessive noise. When they tried to take legal action over the unlawfully modified silencer, an argument erupted between the police officials and the bike riders that later turned into a physical altercation in which inspector Narpal Singh and Constable Ramkesh were injured.

Station house officer (SHO) of Jamia Nagar police station, Inspector Narpal Singh and his team were on night patrol in the area on Saturday. “Around 8.45 pm, when the SHO along with the patrolling staff reached Batla House in Jamia Nagar, he noticed a Royal Enfield motorcycle heading towards Zakir Nagar market from Kabristan Chowk, causing an excessive noise,” a senior police officer said, as quoted by the PTI.

The SHO directed the other cops at the duty to stop the motorcycle for inspection, the officer said and added that during inspection, police discovered that the motorcycle’s silencer was modified which led to noise going above permissible limits. This is a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. The SHO then directed the police staff to take legal action against the accused Asif, aged 24. However, Asif called his father Riyazuddin at the spot who tried to take the motorcycle forcibly.

Accused threatened cops with dire consequences

The biker’s father allegedly asked the cops to settle the matter and let them leave with the bike. He also threatened the SHO with consequences, said the police official. This led to an argument between the police officials and the father-son duo which later escalated to a scuffle. As per the police, Riyazuddin caught hold of the SHO and Asif punched him in the face. The duo allegedy also attacked constable Ramkesh and other cops. However, the cops managed to overpower the dup and arrest them.

The injured cops were taken to the Holy Family Hospital for treatment. The police officer said, “We have registered an FIR against accused Asif and his father for obstructing a public servant from performing his duties and physically assaulting the SHO and other police officers on duty. Both the accused have been arrested.”
