Coimbatore: In a significant verdict, the Coimbatore Consumer Court has directed a Bengaluru-based electric scooter sales company to refund the entire amount paid by a Coimbatore resident, Piroze Rajan, due to the company’s delay in delivering the vehicle and poor service.

Rajan had booked his favorite electric scooter model online on September 1, 2023, paying Rs. 1.67 lakh for the scooter and Rs. 6,199 for vehicle insurance. However, despite waiting for over two months, the company kept delaying the delivery, prompting Rajan to send a notice to cancel the reservation and return the money. Unfortunately, the company failed to respond adequately.

Left with no other option, Rajan filed a complaint with the Kowai Consumer Court, which was investigated by Consumer Court President Thangavel and members Marimuthu and Sukuna. After examining the case, the court found the company to be deficient in service.

In its order, the court directed the company to refund the amount paid by Rajan, totaling Rs. 1.67 lakh and Rs. 6,199 for insurance, with 9% interest. Additionally, the company was ordered to pay Rs. 10,000 as compensation for emotional distress and Rs. 5,000 for litigation expenses.

This ruling highlights the importance of consumer courts in protecting buyers’ rights and holding companies accountable for their actions. The verdict serves as a warning to businesses to ensure timely delivery and satisfactory service to their customers.
