All lifts, escalators in Noida, Ghaziabad to be monitored by five-member committee

Greater Noida: The Uttar Pradesh government has formed a five-member safety committee which will inspect the safety and functioning of lifts and escalators due to the rise in cases of lift-related accidents. The committee will be chaired by the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Manish Kumar Verma.

The five-member committee consist of the vice-chairman of the development authority, additional district magistrate (finance and revenue), municipal commissioner/executive officer, executive engineer from the public works department and assistant director of electrical safety. The members will conduct a meeting in every three months.

The Uttar Pradesh government made a law, Uttar Pradesh Lift and Escalator Rules, 2024, which envisions to make lifts and escalators of the high rise buildings safer for residents. The law came into effect from September 25, 2024. Owing to the increasing cases of lift related incidents, the law was approved by the state cabinet in July this year.

Strict action to be taken against violators

DM Manish Kumar Verma said, “The five member committee has be formed to inspect safety and maintenance of all the lifts and escalators of Gautam Buddh Nagar. We will ensure that the rules are followed by the management and any non-compliance will attract strict action.”

The officials stated that the meeting will be held quarterly for analysing the situation and addressing issues related to the safety of lifts. Electrical inspectors and executive magistrate will conduct joint investigation in case of any accident. A detailed report of the case will be submitted to DM by the committee.

Responsibilities of the committee

1. Supervising maintenance protocols
2. Ensuring implementation of safety rules.
3. Taking quick action in case of accidents.

Verma said, “It is compulsory to get all lifts and escalators registered under six months after implementation of the law. RWAs and Apartment Owners’ Associations (AOAs) will be responsible in residential societies to get the lifts registered. In case the RWA or AOA are not established, maintenance agency or the developer will have to get the lifts registered.”
