Kolkata: In a devastating tragedy, an Air India flight operating from Ahmedabad to London crashed on June 12 shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. According to reports, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has said that it seems no one survived the crash.
The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and it had 230 passengers and 12 crew members, totaling 242 people on board. It departed from Ahmedabad airport at 1.17pm and was scheduled to arrive in London at 6.09pm. However, it went down moments after take-off, crashing into a densely populated neighbourhood close to the airport.
The Air India plane crash will be investigated by AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau). As per reports, there were 242 people on board the Air India Dreamliner Boeing 787 plane and the humungous plane crash has shaken the entire country.
All the prominent leaders including the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister, Defence Minister have expressed grief over this. President Draupadi Murmu has called it a heart-rending disaster. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heartbreaking beyond words”. He said, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” He added that ministers and authorities are working on-ground to assist those impacted.
The flight had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens and 1 Canadian national on board. According to the information given by Air India on a social media post, a helpline number 1800 5691 444 has also been started for the passengers. An investigation is being conducted to find out how the accident happened and Air India is fully cooperating with the investigating officers.
