Air India crash: Rs 25 lakh interim relief announced, 31 victims identified

New Delhi: The aftermath of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad continues to unfold, marked by both the announcement of substantial compensation and the ongoing process of victim identification. Air India has announced an interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each victim and the lone survivor. This significant financial aid, announced on [Date of announcement, if available], is in addition to the earlier commitment of ₹1 crore per family from Tata Sons, the parent company. This dual compensation package aims to provide immediate financial support to those affected by the devastating loss.

Beyond the immediate financial assistance, Air India has confirmed that all medical expenses for those injured in the crash will be fully covered. This commitment extends to students from B.J. Medical College who were among the injured. The meticulous process of victim identification is also underway. Through DNA testing, authorities have so far confirmed the identities of 31 victims, representing a substantial step towards bringing closure to grieving families.

Twelve families have already claimed the remains of their loved ones, and the Gujarat government is facilitating the handover of the identified bodies. The scale of the operation is underscored by the deployment of 230 teams to coordinate with victims’ families and officials.

An independent investigation into the cause of the crash is also underway. A high-level panel, led by the Union Home Secretary, will commence its inquiry on Monday. This committee’s mandate extends beyond simply determining the cause of the accident. The panel’s findings will be used to develop and implement new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at improving aviation safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

A report detailing the panel’s findings and recommendations is expected within three months. The investigation is expected to thoroughly examine all aspects of the flight operation, including weather conditions, aircraft maintenance, and air traffic control.
