After DMK, Congress announces to challenge Waqf Amendment Bill in Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Indian National Congress (INC) on Friday said that it will soon challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Supreme Court after the y after the clearance of the Wafq (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Rajya Sabha. The chief opposition party of the INDIA alliance said that it will continue to contest all the ‘assaults’ of the Modi government on the principles, provisions, and practices which are against the Constitution of India.

The Parliament on early Friday approved the passgae of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament gave its approval after a 13-hour long debate on it. Although opposition parties showed strong objection on the bill, calling it anti-Muslim and unconstitutional, 128 members from Rajya Sabha voted in favour of the legislation and 95 voted against it. This added to the 288 votes in favour and 233 votes against the same amendment bill in Lok Sabha on early Thursday.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge made an attack against the Union government on Friday. He said the BJP-led central government have taken a negative stand on their views on the contentious legislation.

“It is their interpretation, we kept our views on the bill in front of them (government). They have taken a negative stand and they are taking it forward,” Kharge told reporters on Friday outside the Parliament.

Furthermore, Kharge took to his X handle and wrote in Hindi that the bill is brought to harass the minorities in the country. The leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha said that bill won’t be good for anyone because of its flaws.

“The atmosphere in the country regarding the Waqf Board Amendment Bill is such that it feels like this bill has been brought to harass minorities,” Kharge wrote on X.

“Late at night in the Lok Sabha, when this bill was passed, it received 288 votes in favour and 232 votes against. Why did this happen? This means there are many flaws in the bill.” From this, one can guess that despite opposition from various parties, this bill was brought arbitrarily. This ‘might is right’ — won’t be good for anyone!”

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Jairam Ramesh announced that the INC will challenge the Waqf amendment bill in the apex court.

“The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill. We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” Ramesh wrote on X.

The INC is the second party from the INDIA alliance on planning to take the matter to the Supreme Court after Tamil Nadu’s ruling party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam made a similar promise on Thursday with CM MK Stalin making the announcement in the state legislative assembly session.
