Patna: Bihar’s famous and luscious juicy pulp fruit of “Litchi” has created a new record in 2025 as the state has, so far, exported 250 tonnes of Litchi to other states via Darbhanga airport.

Litchi exports to other states have witnessed a rise of 108 per cent in comparison to 2024 when the state had transported 120 tonnes of the juicy fruit.

With Litchi reaching bigger cities, the cargo air service has provided the state’s farmers the access to large markets.

Bihar’s Litchi reaches metro cities

The state’s Litchi-  especially Shahi variety which is known for its sweetness and juicy pulp and grown in north Bihar district of Muzaffapur and its adjoining areas – have been sent to metro cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru this year, creating a record.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) has played a significant role in transporting  Litchis to the metro cities from Darbhanga airport.

Area surrounding Muzaffarpur, the biggest town of north Bihar, including parts of Samastipur boasts of ideal conditions for cultivating these sweet and aromatic fruits.

159.2 tonnes Litchi sent by Indigo Airline

After getting clearance from Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on May 20, SpiceJet airline sent its first consignment to Mumbai on May 21. Indigo and Akasa airlines too exported Litchis to other states from May 23 and June 1, 2025 respectively.

Indigo airline transported a total of 159.2 tonnes of Litchis while SpiceJet transported 47 tonnes and Akasa 44.5 tonnes of Litchis to other states.

Despite challenges of weather, eastern regional headquarters (RHQ-ER), airport, AAI Cargo and Logistics and Allied Services Company Ltd (AAICLAS) and teams of various airlines successfully transported the consignment with better and efficient coordination among them.
