New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to pronounce a verdict on Friday on a previous order to permanently relocate stray dogs from streets to dog shelters in Delhi-NCR. On August 11, the Supreme Court ordered the authorities to pick up stray dogs from all localities and relocate them to dog shelters in Delhi.

The issue came up for the hearing on August 14, before a three-judge special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria. The bench declared to pronounce a verdict on the case on Friday, August 22. There will be a live screening of the Supreme Court hearing on Friday from 10 am onwards at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi by various NGOs.

Citizens took to streets

The previous order, involving the removal of all stray dogs within eight weeks, sparked widespread protests across the national capital region. With several detentions made by police in Delhi-NCR, the outrage from the SC order also resulted in an alleged attack against Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
