Heavy rainfall alert: IMD forecasts wet week for northeast, southern states

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across many parts of India over the next few days. The northeastern states and parts of southern India are likely to experience heavy rainfall, while the northwest and west regions will remain mostly dry.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and northeastern states will see intense weather activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, central and northwestern regions will witness lighter showers with dry conditions likely to prevail in the northwest. 

Rain forecast for Northeast India

The northeast region is set for fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also expected to experience widespread showers during this period. Rainfall will be more scattered across Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim, with Jharkhand and Odisha likely to see isolated to scattered showers.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in the northeast on October 3. In Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, heavy rains are likely on October 3. From October 4-5, heavy rainfall is expected across northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. These areas will continue to face significant rainfall till October 8.

Forecast for South Peninsular India

Southern India, particularly Kerala, Mahe and south interior Karnataka, will see widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka will experience scattered to fairly widespread rain. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana are expected to witness isolated to scattered rainfall as well.

Heavy rainfall is likely over Rayalaseema on October 3, with Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal expected to experience heavy showers from October 3-6. Kerala and Mahe will see heavy rainfall on October 3.

Forecast for Central and West India

Rainfall in central India will be limited to isolated or scattered light to moderate showers, particularly over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh. These regions are expected to see rain mainly during the last three days of the week.

The IMD has forecast dry weather over northwest and west India for the next week. Regions such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra are not expected to witness significant rainfall during this period.
