Gujarat floods: Four dead, three missing after car swept away; rescue operation underway

New Delhi: Gujarat experienced a devastating flash flood tragedy in its Botad district following relentless rainfall. The incident, which resulted in four confirmed deaths and three individuals still missing, unfolded after over 7.5 inches of rain fell within 24 hours. The heavy downpour led authorities to open the gates of the Khambhada Dam to alleviate rising water levels, unfortunately worsening the flood situation across the district.

A car, carrying nine passengers, was swept away by the strong currents created by the sudden influx of water. While two passengers managed to escape, the remaining seven were trapped. The recovery of four bodies confirmed the tragic loss of life.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately launched a search and rescue operation. However, the operation faced significant challenges. Roads leading to the affected area were blocked by the floodwaters, delaying the arrival of the NDRF team until 7:30 pm. Despite these difficulties, the team worked tirelessly throughout the night, their efforts only briefly disrupted by a vehicle breakdown. The operation finally concluded at 3:30 am.

One NDRF member recounted the events, describing the frantic efforts to reach the scene and the heartbreaking reality of the situation. Eyewitness accounts corroborated the details, with one individual describing how they narrowly escaped the floodwaters while others, including family members, were trapped.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, the incident underscored the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. While forty individuals were successfully evacuated, the ongoing search for the missing underlines the severity of the crisis. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of flash floods and the need for robust emergency response systems. The incident underscored the importance of preparedness and effective disaster management strategies in flood-prone regions.
