Dehradun: Uttarakhand’s popular hill stations are struggling under the weight of a massive holiday rush, with thousands of vehicles choking roads, causing unbearable delays and even leading to tragic consequences.

Key destinations like Mussoorie, Haridwar, Rishikesh and parts of Kumaon like Nainital, Almora and Mukteshwar have been witnessing severe traffic congestion, raising concerns over infrastructure preparedness and safety during the peak travel season.

Mussoorie gridlocked, tourist dies amidst delays

Mussoorie, one of Uttarakhand’s most sought-after tourist spots, bore the brunt of the congestion. Major roads, including the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway, Kincreg to Library and Picture Palace, Motilal Nehru Road, and the famous Mall Road, experienced standstill traffic as thousands of vehicles flooded the narrow hill routes.

The situation turned tragic when 62-year-old Kamal Kishore Tandon, a tourist from Delhi, fell critically ill amidst the gridlock. His family attempted to rush him to a hospital in Dehradun, but remained stuck in traffic for over 90 minutes. Despite efforts to reach medical care, the delay proved fatal, sparking public outcry over inefficient traffic management.

Authorities responded by blocking larger vehicles at Kuthal Gate on Dehradun-Mussoorie highway, allowing only tourists with confirmed hotel bookings to enter the region. However, the measure did little to ease congestion, as the surge of vehicles continued throughout the weekend.

Haridwar faces pilgrim surge, Kumaon restricts two-wheelers

Haridwar, a spiritual hotspot, also faced severe slowdowns due to an influx of pilgrims. Traffic between Alaknanda Tirahe and VIP Ghat moved at a near standstill, with vehicles crawling forward at barely one kilometer per hour. Parking spaces overflowed, forcing visitors to park on unauthorized road shoulders, further worsening the jam.

SP (Crime/Traffic) Jitendra Mehra addressed concerns, stating, “There is no complete jam, but traffic is moving very slowly across four lanes. The situation is challenging, especially as some drivers recklessly move over dividers, adding to the chaos. We urge pilgrims to follow traffic advisories and cooperate.”

In Kumaon, authorities enforced entry restrictions for two-wheelers, attempting to curb congestion. Over 800 motorcyclists were turned back at Kathgodam in the last two days alone, as part of ongoing crowd-control efforts.

Public frustration over Uttarakhand’s traffic management

Local businesses and residents have expressed growing frustration over the state’s inability to regulate peak-season tourist inflows. In Landour, traffic remained gridlocked from morning until late night, significantly impacting local traders. “The roads are overwhelmed, and our businesses suffer. We lose customers because people cannot physically reach shops due to the traffic jams,” said a local shopkeeper in Nainital.

Will Uttarakhand improve its traffic plan?

The tragic incident in Mussoorie has renewed calls for better planning, stricter vehicle limits, and improved infrastructure to handle seasonal surges. With the holiday season still underway, many worry that without immediate intervention, further disruptions and even fatal delays could occur. Authorities are reportedly reviewing long-term solutions to ease congestion during peak tourist seasons. However, residents and visitors alike demand urgent action, fearing that without immediate measures, Uttarakhand’s tourist hubs could become increasingly dangerous for travelers.
