India experiences COVID-19 resurgence: Maharashtra, Delhi, and Bengaluru on high alert

New Delhi: A resurgence of COVID-19 cases in India has prompted concern and increased vigilance across the country. Several states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, and Telangana, are reporting a steady rise in new infections, although numbers remain relatively low compared to previous peaks. The increase has led to intensified monitoring and the implementation of precautionary measures.

In Maharashtra, the Thane district reported 24 new cases, with nine hospitalisations and 46 patients in home isolation. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality of the year. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) also reported 36 active cases and one death. These figures underscore the importance of maintaining vigilance and adopting proactive health measures.

Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, is experiencing a rise in cases, leading to increased mask usage among healthcare workers and recommendations for the elderly and pregnant women. Schools have been advised to keep symptomatic students home and to test those with severe respiratory symptoms. The state government is reviewing its preparedness in terms of oxygen supply, hospital beds, ventilators, and medications.

Delhis active cases have reached 104. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the situation as “seasonal” and stressed the absence of any need for panic. However, hospitals are maintaining readiness and have issued advisories to ensure the availability of essential resources like beds, oxygen, and vaccines. Telangana, despite reporting only one case, remains on alert.

Nationally, active COVID-19 cases have increased to 1,090, up from 257 the previous week. Kerala leads with 430 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), and Gujarat (83). Six deaths were reported nationwide last week. Experts attribute the rise to new subvariants that can circumvent existing immunity. While most cases are mild, resembling the flu or common cold, authorities continue to recommend mask use for symptomatic individuals, good hygiene practices, and avoidance of crowded places, especially for high-risk individuals.

Adding to global concern, a highly infectious new COVID-19 strain that caused a surge in hospitalisations in China has been detected in the US, including New York City. Experts warn that its rapid spread highlights the potential for new variants to quickly overwhelm existing immunity. The situation underscores the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of evolving pandemic dynamics.
