New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh has been placed on high alert after India’s dramatic military retaliation against a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, last month. The “Operation Sindoor,” saw Indian forces launch a series of targeted missile strikes against nine terror-related sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the early hours of Wednesday.

Confirming the heightened state of vigilance, Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP), Prashant Kumar, announced that a Red Alert had been declared throughout the state. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Kumar emphasised that all police units in Uttar Pradesh had been instructed to work closely with the Indian Armed Forces to enhance security, particularly around key infrastructure and public spaces.

Tightened security across key Uttar Pradesh cities including Lucknow, Varanasi & Noida

Notably, in Uttar Pradesh, security has been visibly heightened across several major cities, including Lucknow, Varanasi, and Noida. Armed police patrols, surveillance drones, and additional checkpoints have been set up around transport hubs, government buildings, and other critical infrastructure.

The military operation marks a significant response to the horrific terror attack on 22 April in Pahalgam, where 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen tragically lost their lives. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) clarified that the missile strikes were “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” specifically avoiding Pakistani military installations.

Among the nine locations targeted were the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) base in Muridke, both located in Pakistan’s Punjab province. These groups are widely considered responsible for a number of violent attacks against India, and the government has made it clear that the strikes were a response to their actions.

The government has also reiterated its determination to tackle terrorism at all levels and warned those who harbour or support terrorists of severe consequences.
