PM Modi, US VP Vance welcome ‘significant progress’ in negotiations for trade agreement

New Delhi: The recent visit of US Vice President JD Vance to India marked a significant step forward in strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. His meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on bolstering cooperation across various sectors, notably defence, energy, and strategic technologies. A pivotal development arising from these discussions was the substantial progress made in negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The two leaders formally announced the finalisation of the terms of reference for the BTA negotiations.

This sets a clear framework for future dialogues, outlining the key economic priorities to be addressed. These priorities are expected to encompass a range of issues, including the streamlining of tariffs and improvements in market access for both nations. The White House issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the advancement made in these critical trade negotiations.

This informal setting fostered further collaboration and strengthened personal ties between the two countries’ leaders. During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his warmest regards to President Donald Trump. This exchange underscores the strong personal rapport between the leaders and further reinforces the commitment to the bilateral partnership.

The importance of this developing trade pact is further highlighted by India’s aim to finalise the first phase of the agreement before a pause on reciprocal tariffs expires. This demonstrates the urgency and significance attached to securing a beneficial trade deal for both countries. The India-US partnership is a defining collaboration of the 21st century, committed to mutually beneficial cooperation encompassing trade, technology, defence, energy, and people-to-people interactions.
