Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin, was apprehended in the United States and subsequently extradited to India following a protracted legal battle. His arrival in Delhi was met with heightened security measures. The NIA, India’s premier counter-terrorism agency, confirmed his arrival and also released an image depicting Rana in their custody.

Rana was involved in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks committed by Lashkar-e-Tayyiba which is a designated foreign terrorist organisation. The group carried out a series of 12 deadly attacks in Mumbai, infiltrating through the Arabian Sea. The attackers fired guns at a train station and threw grenades into crowds. They also entered the Taj Hotel, where they gunned down people and detonated explosives. The group also attacked a Jewish community centre where they shot and killed many people.
