New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday directed the Delhi Police to make the elimination of interstate gangs in the national capital its top priority. He mentioned the need for a “ruthless approach” to dismantle these criminal networks. Shah’s directive was issued during a high-level security review meeting held in Delhi. The meeting was attended by newly-elected Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Police Commissioner Ashish Sood and other senior police officers.

During the discussion, the home minister urged police authorities to adopt a strict, no-tolerance stance in dealing with organised crime. “Action must be taken with top to bottom and bottom to top approach in narcotics cases, and such drug networks should be dismantled,” he said.

Shah also instructed the Delhi Police to take firm action against networks facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshis and Rohingya into India. Emphasising national security concerns, he stressed the need for a strict approach to the issue.

“Strict action should be taken against the entire network that helps Bangladeshi and Rohingya intruders enter the country, get their documents made and facilitate their stay here. The issue of illegal intruders is also related to national security, and it should be dealt with strictly. They should be identified and deported,” he said during the meeting.

Public outreach initiative

He also urged DCP-level officers of the Delhi Police to visit police stations and hold public hearing camps to address citizens’ concerns. “Delhi Police should identify the places where traffic jams are reported every day and the Delhi Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary should meet and find a quick solution to this so that the public can get relief,” Shah said.

Shah instructed the Delhi government to develop a ‘Monsoon Action Plan’ to tackle waterlogging by identifying affected areas. He also directed that Delhi Police permission will no longer be necessary for construction-related matters in the city. “For quick disposal of 2020 Delhi riots cases, the Delhi government should appoint special prosecutors so that these cases can be disposed of soon,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said.
