New Delhi: Following the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced a major restructuring of its organisational wings. This strategic move, spearheaded by AAP leader Gopal Rai, aims to solidify the party’s position as a robust opposition force within the Delhi legislative assembly.
Rai revealed that AAP has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of its core and frontal wings. Meetings have already been held with state office bearers from key organisational units, including the Purvanchal wing, auto wing, and women’s wing, to discuss the streamlining of operations and to improve their effectiveness. The party intends to revitalise these wings to amplify its voice both within the legislative assembly and within the broader society. Rai stressed that the party’s legislative party will be vocal within the House and its societal wings will hold the newly elected government accountable to their manifesto promises.
“Today, after the election (Delhi Assembly) results, we have held a meeting with the state office bearers of all the frontal organisations of AAP, in which all our major frontal organisations, Purvanchal wing, auto wing, women’s wing have participated today. We have started the process of restructuring the main wing. Similarly, the party will restructure its other wings,” Gopal Rai said in a press briefing.
“Our legislative party will raise its voice in the House, similarly, our wing in the society will be given the responsibility to raise its voice on those (promises made by the elected government in its manifesto) points. AAP will further intensify its preparations to play the role of a strong positive opposition,” Rai added according to the news agency ANI.
The party’s plans to solidify its opposition role are not only organisational but include a formal announcement of its Leader of Opposition (LoP). Rai announced that the swearing-in ceremony for all AAP MLAs is scheduled for February 24th, and the LoP will be announced immediately afterwards.
The announcement of restructuring comes amid ongoing political sparring between the AAP and the newly elected BJP government in Delhi. The BJP’s failure to include in its first cabinet meeting a proposed Rs 2,500 financial assistance scheme for women, a key election promise, has been heavily criticised by the AAP.
AAP leaders, including Gopal Rai, Priyanka Kakkar and Atishi, have accused the BJP of reneging on its promises and prioritising its own agenda over the needs of Delhi’s women. They contrasted the BJP’s actions in Delhi with its previous performance in states such as Haryana and Maharashtra, highlighting a pattern of broken promises. The AAP has pointedly focused on the BJP’s apparent prioritisation of tabling the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on February 25th, instead of implementing its pre-election commitments.
While the BJP Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, has responded by announcing her government’s intention to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme with a Rs 5 lakh top-up and to table the 14 pending CAG reports, this has not appeased the AAP, which remains focused on the unfulfilled promise of financial assistance to women.
