New Delhi: BJP, which secured a decisive victory in the Delhi assembly election results on February 8, has shortlisted 15 contenders from its pool of 48 elected MLAs in the national capital and a meeting of the legislature party is likely to take place on February 17 or 18 to choose the chief minister, sources said.
BJP’s government formation process will pick up pace once Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives back home from the US on Friday evening following which the party’s top brass will hold meetings in this connection over the weekend.
As part of BJP’s government forming preparations, 15 names have already been shortlisted from a pool of 48 legislators, and from these, the Delhi chief minister, cabinet ministers and assembly speaker will be finalised.
Meetings scheduled to decide Delhi chief minister
The BJP is gearing up for a series of high-level meetings, beginning with a legislative party gathering, expected to take place on 17th or 18th February. The swearing ceremony is likely to take place a day later on February 19 or 20 and the venue would be the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Upon PM Modi’s arrival, discussions will be held with Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief JP Nadda and other top leaders of the party. These discussions will determine the final decision on the chief minister’s post and cabinet of the Delhi government.
The BJP’s leadership has done extensive homework in preparation for these talks, ensuring that the final decision on Delhi’s leadership is made promptly after PM Modi’s return. All steps have been carefully planned, and the party is now moving forward with confidence as it prepares to formalise its next moves in the capital.
The BJP defeated AAP in the February 5 polls, returning to power in Delhi after 26 years and winning 48 of the 70 Assembly seats.
