Prayagraj: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj today and take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam at around 11 am.

Maha Kumbh 2025, which began on Paush Purnima (13 January), is the world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering, drawing devotees from around the globe. The event will continue until Mahashivratri on 26 February, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Maha Kumbh Mela on 5 February, taking a dip at the Sangam and offering prayers to Maa Ganga around 11 am, the statement said. Committed to preserving and promoting India’s spiritual and cultural heritage, Modi has actively worked to improve infrastructure and facilities at pilgrimage sites, it added.

During his visit to Prayagraj on 13 December 2024, Modi inaugurated 167 development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore, aimed at enhancing connectivity, amenities, and public services.

Ahead of the prime minister’s visit, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was in Prayagraj and the Maha Kumbh Mela area on Tuesday to review preparations.

Held once every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh has already attracted over 38 crore pilgrims from across India and the world, according to the Uttar Pradesh government organising the grand event.

Facing intense scrutiny after the stampede that claimed at least 30 lives, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government took no chances for the Basant Panchami bathing at Maha Kumbh, deploying personnel with a “zero error” approach under Operation 11.

Crores of devotees take Basant Panchami ‘Amrit Snan’

On Monday, the Basant Panchami ‘Amrit Snan’ saw over 2.5 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the Maha Kumbh under a reinforced security framework. The challenges for authorities persist, especially with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to visit the event on Wednesday for his ceremonial dip.

The state government has been fending off allegations of concealing the actual death toll from the January 29 Mauni Amavasya stampede and was under pressure to overhaul its security measures for the remainder of the 12-year mega gathering.
