Phase II Project: Chennai Metro Rail Limited to complete land acquisition in 4 months

Chennai: The land acquisition process for the second Phase of Chennai Metro will be completed in four months, said Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Comprising of three corridors, the process of land acquisition for the project had started around six years ago.

These corridors include-Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5). The entire stretch of the corridors will be 118.9 kilometers.

Chennai Metro officials maintain that the work on the last round of land acquisition is being carried out in Rajiv Gandhi Salai area and 99 per cent of the acquisition work has been completed, said a report in The Hindu.

At least 116.24 hectare of land is needed to build various infrastructures including stations and other related facilities. “So far, around 114.22 hectare of land has been acquired. The remaining 2.02 hectare of land will be acquired by May this year,” the report quoted a CMRL official as saying.

As CMRL decided to get more land along Rajiv Gandhi Salai stretch, the land acquisition process was delayed. The additional land was needed due to required in view of design changes.

These changes were introduced at a later stage of the project to avoid disturbing arterial road and footpaths.

“Most of the land being acquired is between Sholinganallur and SIPCOT in Siruseri area. All the required land acquisition will be completed in a fast manner,” the report said quoting another official.
