Dehradun: Topics like forest fire and landslide are likely to be included in the school curriculum of Uttarakhand. The hill state faces a major challenge to deal with forest fire and landslides. The state government apparently wants students to learn the art of dealing with such problems. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is designing the school curriculum as per the requirement of the state.
Keeping in mind the needs and aspirations of the hill state, the SCERT is working on “State Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage”. The school curriculum is prepared under the New Education Policy 2020. The final draft of the proposed school curriculum will be sent to the state government for its approval.
Statehood agitation to be a part of the school curriculum
The curriculum, which SCERT is preparing, will be included in the regional subjects of class 9 and 10. In the proposed curriculum, there will be a subject on the state’s heritage and great personalities for the students of class 6 to 8. The students will be made aware about the state’s glorious history, its cultural diversity, statehood agitation, social and cultural movements, and major religious tourist spots in the state.
Recommendation for 10 subjects for class 10 students
In the new curriculum, the SCERT may recommend 10 subjects for the students of class 10, instead of five subjects which are taught currently. In class 9 and 10, there will be three languages, including two Indian languages. The subjects like mathematics, computational thinking, social science, Arts, Physical education, and Vocational education will be given special focus in the proposed school curriculum. The school curriculum is prepared as per the recommendation of the NEP 2020.
Feedback from people for school curriculum
Earlier, the education department had sought feedback from people to prepare the school curriculum. Several educationists, experts, and teachers gave their suggestions. They also underlined the need for including a topic on the language diversity in the state. In the proposed school curriculum, emphasis is given on multilingual education.
