New Delhi: In a major haul by the Income Tax department, gold and cash worth crores of rupees were recovered from the residence of a former BJP MLA and a businessman in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district. The department conducted raids at various locations linked to the duo over three days.

Raids were carried out at the residences of former BJP MLA Harvansh Singh Rathore from Banda, and Rajesh Kesharwani, a businessman involved in the beedi and construction industries, in Sagar. During the raid, the IT department found documents related to assets valued at approximately Rs 150 crore. Rathore’s residence alone yielded 14kg of gold and jewellery, with 9.8kg of gold seized by the authorities. Rs 3.8 crore in cash was also found from his residence.

Seven cars registered under different names but reportedly used by the Kesharwani family were also confiscated. These vehicles were seized as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged tax evasion and disproportionate wealth.

According to reports, the Kesharwani family’s business dealings, including a large moneylending operation, were also under scrutiny. Documents related to transactions of around Rs 140 crore and several properties linked to suspicious ownership have been recovered. Around 4.7kg of gold was also found from the Kesharwani residence. Documents showing major business dealings including mortgage papers and cheques were also recovered.

The raids have revealed shocking levels of financial irregularities. In a first for the state, the IT Department uncovered ‘benami’ cars—vehicles registered under other people’s names but used by the Kesharwani family.
