New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the Christmas celebrations organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) at its headquarters in the national capital on Monday, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Sunday.

This marks the first occasion in which a prime minister will take part in an event at the headquarters of the Catholic Church in India, according to the release. The Prime Minister is also expected to meet with key leaders from the Christian community, including cardinals, bishops, and lay leaders, the statement added. Founded in 1944, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) is the central body representing Catholics throughout the country.

PM attends Christmas celebration

Earlier, on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi participated in a Christmas celebration hosted at the residence of Union Minister George Kurian in Delhi, where he was warmly welcomed and interacted with notable Christian community figures.

“Attended the Christmas celebrations at the residence of Union Minister Shri George Kurian Ji. Also interacted with eminent members of the Christian community,” PM Modi posted on X. The prime minister received a warm reception at the Kurian residence, where he was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

About Christmas festival

Christmas is celebrated on December 25 each year. It marks the birth of Jesus Christ and is observed as both a religious and cultural occasion by billions of people all over the world. On Christmas Eve, people across the country attend midnight masses and churches are adorned with festive lights. The festival is celebrated with firecrackers.

It is one of the holiest days in Christianity and Christmas is traditionally spent with family and friends. People decorate their homes with Christmas trees, lights and wreaths and host festive gatherings. The day is also marked by homecomings, happy family reunions and delicious meals. Carol singing, brilliant Christmas lights and beautifully decorated trees contribute to the holiday spirit.
