New Delhi: The Parliamentary panel to scrutinise the two bills proposing’ One Nation, One Election’ in India has been finalised with BJP’s PP Chaudhary Anurag Thakur, Bansuri Swaraj, and Priyanka Gandhi, Manish Tewari from the Congress among the 21 Lok Sabha members being a part of it.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) will have 21 MPs from the Lok Sabha and 10 MPs from the Rajya Sabha. The new JPC has to report to parliament by the first day of the last week of the next session.
The two ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) bills, including one proposing a constitutional amendment to establish a mechanism for holding simultaneous elections, were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday following a heated debate.
The Lok Sabha’s list of business for Thursday included the names of 21 MPs proposed for inclusion in the committee, with a motion for its constitution to be moved by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
BJP MPs on ONOE panel
Former Union Minister Parshottambhai Rupala, Bhartruhari Mahtab, Anil Baluni, C M Ramesh, Bansuri Swaraj, Vishnu Dayal Ram, and Sambit Patra are among the BJP members set to join the panel from the Lok Sabha, besides Shrikant Shinde from the BJP ally – Shiv Sena.
Sources said former Law Chaudhary would be the committee chairperson, with Thakur also in the running. The final decision will be made by Speaker Om Birla by parliamentary rules.
Other members in the panel
Opposition MPs in the JPC include Manish Tewari and Sukhdeo Bhagat from the Congress, Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Kalyan Banerjee of the TMC, T M Selvaganapathi of the DMK, G M Harish Balayogi of the TDP, Supriya Sule of the NCP (Sharad Pawar), Chandan Chauhan of the RLD, and Balashowry Vallabhaneni of the Jana Sena Party.
The Rajya Sabha will nominate its 10 representatives for the committee through a separate communication.
Of the Lok Sabha members proposed, 14 belong to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including 10 from the BJP.
