New Delhi: In a significant boost to advanced weaponry in India, the Indian Light Tank (ILT) or Zorawar has fired multiple rounds at different ranges at high altitudes. The ILT fired rounds at an altitude of over 4200-metre with consistent accuracy.
The development comes following the Phase I trial in desert environment in September 2024. The light tank has been designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Chennai-based Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment.
Light tank is 25-ton class armoured fighting vehicle
The light tank is manufactured by the Industry Partner Larsen and Toubro Precision Engineering and Systems. This light tank is being designed as a 25-ton class armoured fighting vehicle to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces for use in high altitude operations. As per a statement by DRDO, the ILT’s design to realisation to demonstration at high altitude has been achieved in three years.
The Indian Air Force has also demonstrated the airlift capability of ILT. This capability by IAF would assist the armed forces for quick deployment of the light tank in conditions which are remote and difficult to access through road or rail.
Light tank to undergo further trials
Following the completion of two phases of internal performance trials, the light tank would be undergoing further trials before being offered to armed forces for user trials. The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force actively assisted in the trials of ILT.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated DRDO, Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and L&T for the successful completion of light tabk trials at high altitude.
DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat and defence department secretary have also congratulated the entire team of light tank and other industry partners for their efforts in the trials.
