‘Treated like a beast’: Wife’s 2022 dowry complaint haunts techie’s suicide case

New Delhi: After the tragic suicide of a Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash, new details have surfaced regarding a 2022 police complaint filed by his wife, accusing him and his family of harassment and assault for dowry. The complaint, lodged on April 24, 2022, in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, describes how Nikita Singhania alleged that her husband, Atul Subhash, physically abused her and began treating their marriage “like a beast,” according to PTI.

In the complaint, Nikita named her husband, his parents and her brothers-in-law as the accused parties. An FIR was filed under the Dowry Prohibition Act in response to the allegations. Nikita, originally from Jaunpur, married Subhash, a native of Bihar, in 2019. The couple lived in Bengaluru, where they were both employed.

‘Dowry demand of Rs 10 lakh sparked abuse’

Nikita’s complaint said that after their marriage, Subhash and his family demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh and said that they were dissatisfied with the dowry provided by her parents. She said that this demand led to both physical and mental abuse by her in-laws.

Despite seeking support from her parents, who advised her to “listen and continue living with it,” Nikita said the situation worsened. Her husband allegedly began threatening and assaulting her. She further said that he would transfer her entire salary into his account under duress. Nikita also said that the ongoing abuse affected her father’s health, which ultimately led to his death from a stroke on August 17, 2019.

Atul Subhash suicide

Subhash, employed with a private company in Bengaluru, died by suicide on Monday. In a 24-page suicide note, he blamed his wife and her family for his emotional distress and citied ongoing marital problems and multiple legal cases against him. A case of abetment to suicide has been filed against Nikita and her relatives. In the note, Subhash disputed Nikita’s account of her father’s death, alleging that he had passed away due to heart-related issues, not from shock over dowry demands.
