A proposal regarding the railway yard remodelling and the construction of the terminal is still to be cleared by the railway board. There is a hope that the works on these two proposals will begin after the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) submits its mitigation report. These two proposals are meant to pave the way for the arrival of the 24-coach trains at the Harrwala railway station.

Growing pressure of passengers and trains on Dehradun railway station

As per one estimate, the Dehradun railway station witnesses the movement of about 1500 train passengers every day. 15 trains originate from this most important railway station of the hill state to different destinations, including New Delhi, Amritsar, Howrah, Prayagraj, Lucknow, and Kota. However, the passengers face problems in getting reserved berths in these trains because of the high demand for tickets. Some passengers of Dehradun city go to Haridwar to catch their trains. The problem with Dehradun city is that it is located at high altitude and thus, 24-coach trains do not come here.

Keeping in mind these problems, Moradabad division (Northern Railway) made a proposal to develop the Harrawala railway station, located at about 12 km away from the Dehradun city, as a 24-coach terminal about a year ago. The first phase of modernization works of Harrawala has already begun. It took about one year due to the underground cable and rocky grounds. Meanwhile, the shifting works of cables continued. The development of Harrawala railway station as a 24-caoch terminal will enhance rail connectivity of Dehradun.
