New Delhi: Justice Manmohan was on Thursday (December 5) sworn in as the judge of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on administered the oath of office to Justice Manmohan.
With Justice Manmohan taking oath as a judge of the top court, the working strength of the apex court would rise to 33, which is one short of the total sanctioned strength of the apex court, including the CJI.
Two vacancies in the top court arose following the retirements of Justice Hima Kohli and former CJI DY Chandrachud.
Justice Manmohan was appointed as additional judge of Delhi High Court in 2008
Justice Manmohan, the son of bureaucrat-turned politician late Jagmohan, was appointed as an additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008 and he was made a permanent judge of the High Court on December 17, 2009. Before his elevation to the top court, he was functioning as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court since September 29, 2024. He was earlier appointed as the Delhi High Court’s acting chief justice on November 9, 2023.
Centre on December 3 notified elevation of Justice Manmohan to apex court
The Centre had on December 3 notified the elevation of Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court following November 28 recommendation of the apex court collegium to the Centre to appoint Justice Manmohan as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Collegium on November 28 recommended Justice Manmohan’s name
A five-member apex court collegium comprising CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and AS Oka in its meeting held on November 28 had deliberated on and had discussed the names of serving chief justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts eligible for appointment to the top court and had recommended the name of Justice Manmohan for appointment as the Supreme Court judge.
