New Delhi: Prominent Hindu seers have announced a proposal to establish a Sanatan Board akin to the Waqf Board, aimed at protecting temples, monasteries (mutts), and followers of Sanatan Dharma. The proposal, focused on safeguarding religious heritage and waging legal battles to reclaim temples converted into mosques, will be discussed at the Dharma Sansad during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on January 26, 2025.

Acharya Balkananda Giri, Mahamandaleshwar of Anand Akhara, shared details of the proposal after a meeting of seers. “The board will ensure the protection of Sanatan Dharma institutions and its followers. It will not aim to seize others’ properties but will fight legal battles for reclaiming demolished temples and restoring their sanctity,” he stated.

Key objectives of the Sanatan Board

  • Legal action to reclaim temples converted into mosques.
  • Renovation of ancient temples.
  • Campaigns against religious conversions.
  • Preservation of Sanskrit, Vedic scriptures, and puranas.
  • Inclusion of retired judges, senior lawyers, and religious leaders from the 13 Akharas in the board.

Nationwide signature campaign

A nationwide signature campaign supporting the board’s formation will culminate in submissions to the Prime Minister and chief ministers, seeking constitutional status for the Sanatan Board.

Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri confirmed that the Dharma Sansad, a congregation of saints and seers, will deliberate on the proposal. Invitations will be extended to Shankaracharyas of the four peethas, heads of all 13 Akharas, and seers nationwide. “The board is crucial for protecting temples and monasteries from undue government control and ensuring their independence”, Puri said, lauding the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He described their tenure as an “era of Sanatan resurgence”.

The Maha Kumbh will take place in Prayagraj from 13 January to 26 February 2025, with arrangements underway to host millions of devotees. The Akhara Parishad has been preparing for this grand event for over three years. Facilities are in place to serve prasad to 5,000 pilgrims at a time, with expectations of participation from saints worldwide.
