Ganga’s originating point polluted by sewage, Uttarakhand govt report reveals

An Uttarakhand government report has made shocking revelations about the magnitude of the pollution in the river Ganges. In the report, the Uttarakhand government informed National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the originating point of the holy river is also polluted by sewage treatment plant (STP) discharge.

This point was made during proceedings regarding measures to prevent and control pollution in the Ganga in the state. The NGT had sought reports from the Uttarakhand and other states regarding pollution in Ganga.

The NGT was informed that faecal coliform with most probable number (MPN) of 540/100 ml was found in the sample collected from the one million litres per day (MLD) capacity sewage treatment plant (STP) at Gangotri, said a report in PTI.
