Reduced rainfall or global warming: What’s causing warmer November in Uttarakhand’s plain areas?

Dehradun: In Uttarakhand, this November month is warmer in comparison to last year and people in the state are not witnessing as much cold as they used to experience in previous years.

According to the director of Indian meteorological centre, Dehradun, Dr. Bikram Singh, “This year, the state saw a reduced rain activity which is a major reason for the temperature rise in the month of November, however, global warming can also be an additional reason behind this.”

Temperature is above normal in plain areas

The weather in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand has become pleasant due to light rain. Meanwhile, the plains are experiencing sweat-inducing heat during the day. As the first week of November comes to an end, the cold is not as intense as usual. This year, temperatures are above normal for November, causing people to feel the heat during the day.

Capital Dehradun is witnessing bright sunshine in afternoon

In Dehradun, the sun’s intensity during the day keeps the heat from subsiding, causing daytime temperatures to remain high. While the mountains in Uttarakhand are experiencing increasing cold, residents in the plains are still using fans during the day but switching to warm blankets at night. This has resulted in a significant temperature difference between day and night in Doon, making it chilly in the mornings and evenings. According to the IMD, Dehradun, the minimum temperature of Dehradun was recorded at 16.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday.  The maximum temperature of Dehradun is expected to be 29 degrees Celsius on Friday, 8 November which is above normal.

What are the reasons behind a warmer November this year?

Dr. Bikram Singh, Director of IMD Dehradun, noted that this November is warmer compared to previous years. The rise in temperature is attributed to reduced rainfall across the state and continuous sunshine. Even in November, temperatures are above normal, making people feel the heat during the day. Normally, cold weather begins after Diwali, prompting people to wear warm clothes, and cold winds start blowing in Dehradun around this time. However, this year is different due to dry conditions caused by lower-than-normal rainfall in October, resulting in a significant rain deficit across all districts.

Is global warming a reason?

When asked about the impact of global warming on Uttarakhand, Dr. Bikram Singh acknowledged that global warming is a global phenomenon and hill states are not immune to its effects. However, he stated that global warming cannot be solely blamed for the unusually warm November this year. Only if this pattern continues in the coming years can global warming be considered a significant factor.
