Mumbai: A day after Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla was transferred, she has been replaced with Sanjay Verma to the post. Shukla was removed from her post after a complaint was filed by the Congress. The state will go on polls on November 20, with results to be announced on November 23. Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar was given an extra charge of Maharashtra after the EC’s announcement on Shukla.
Who is IPS Sanjay Verma
IPS Sanjay Verma was one of the main contenders to the post. A 1990-batch Maharashtra cadre office, Verma serving as Director General of Legal and Technical at the moment. He will retire from services in April 2028. He is currently heading the Forensic Sciences Laboratories for crime detection and investigation in the state, The new Maharashtra Police DGP has played a very important role in improving the forensic infrastructure for the preservation and collection of evidence. During his tenure, Verma had also deployed nearly 260 forensic vans with 2,200 scientists and experts. The decision was taken for evidence collection tin crime investigations.
Shukla transferred after complaint filed by Congress, other political parties
Earlier, the EC had ordered the transfer of Shukla after a complaint by the Congress and other political parties. It asked Maharashtra Chief Secretary to transfer Shukla’s responsibilities to the next senior IPS officer in the cadre. Accordingly, IPS officer Phansalkar was handed over the charges until a full-time DGP was appointed.
Following the development, the Congress thanked the EC for prompt action on Shukla. Patole had also urged the commission to not appoint Shukla to any position, due to legal framework.
