An attempt to create sensationalism: SC rejects plea against COVID-19 vaccine

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Monday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking action against COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca, which was manufactured in India by Serum Institute of India, after incidents of blood clotting and people dying due to alleged COVID-19 vaccination were reported.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwal and Justice Manoj Misra said, “This is a petition aimed at creating sensation. Look at the flip side, what would be the side effect if people had not taken Covid 19 vaccine, what would have happened?”

“we don’t want to rake this up, this is just to create a sensation,” the court added.

The court also remarked that “because of COVID vaccination humanity was saved.”

This petition filed in the supreme court had sough setting up of a committee of medical experts headed by AIIMS Delhi director to look into allegations of blood clots being formed in people who were administered COVID-19 vaccines.

What did the plea say?

The petition also said that the committee should be presided by a retired judge of the supreme court.

This PIL in the apex court comes after AstraZeneca in April this year admitted in a United Kingdom court that its COVID-19 vaccine has potential to cause Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS), associated with blood clotting.

During the hearing when the lawyer for the Public Interest Petitioners submitted that Astra Zeneca had admitted to the vaccine causing blood clotting, the supreme court judges suggested that may be the petitioners can file a class action suit against AstraZeneca.

The pharma giant, Astra Zeneca is presently being sued in UK court for the COVID-19 vaccine which had caused deaths and serious injuries in over dozen of cases, where people have lost their lives due to blood clotting years after taking the vaccine.
