Early Trends in Jammu and Kashmir Election Vote Counting: NC-Congress crosses majority mark with 52 seats

As counting of votes for Jammu Kashmir assembly elections continues,  the early trends show that the National Conference-Congress alliance has crossed the majority mark with 52 seats. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is winning on 29 seats. Jammu and Kashmir went to polls in three phases – September 18, 25, and October 1 – for its 90 seats. The voter turnout was 63.88 per cent. The turnout saw a rise from the 58.58 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.

It was the first Assembly elections in 10 years in Jammu and Kashmir. This was also the first Assembly election in the Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

In the previous 2014 assembly polls, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP joined hands and formed a coalition government. The late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir then. But the BJP severed ties and broke the alliance in 2018. Jammu and Kashmir came under central rule. The UT will now have its first elected government since then.
