‘We should not allow false narratives’: Army chief Upendra Dwivedi on Manipur issue

New Delhi: Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday said that Army and the government were trying to restore the people’s trust in Manipur and prevention of ‘false narratives’ was a major challenges towards it.

While citing examples to recent incident involving use of drone bombs and infiltration of over 900 anti-national elements into Manipur from Myanmar, Army chief said bringing peace to the state should be a ‘whole-of-nation’ approach.

“We should not allow false narratives. For example, there was the narrative of bomb drones. We went on the ground and checked and there were no bomb drones. Another false narrative was that 900 Anti-national elements had infiltrated. We checked, there is nothing like that,” said General Dwivedi while speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue in the national capital.

General Dwivedi wants a ‘whole-of-nation’ approach for peace in Manipur

While emphasising on a ‘whole-of-nation’ approach for bringing peace in Manipur, General Dwivedi said that Army was taking all steps needed to bring normalcy.

“Today the situation may be stable, but it is tense. First of all, we should be very clear. It should be a whole-of-nation approach. We are trying to restore the trust. We have been able to recover a large number of weapons,” added the Army chief.

In the same event, the Army chief also highlighted that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh was stable but sensitive and not normal. He said though a ‘positive signalling’ was coming out from the diplomatic talks between the two sides, but the execution of any plan depends on the military commanders on the ground.

“The positive signalling is coming from the diplomatic side, but what we need to understand (is that) the diplomatic side gives options and possibilities,” he said.
