Newborn dies after mother gives birth in hospital toilet in Meghalaya

New Delhi: A woman gave birth in the toilet of Nongpoh Civil Hospital in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday evening, with the newborn passing away minutes later. Monalisa Langi, a resident of Umden Diwon, had initially been taken to the Umden Primary Health Centre after experiencing labour pains early in the morning. Due to her condition, she was referred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, where she was admitted around 4 am and there she was provided preliminary treatment.

Later in the evening, Langi reported intense labour pains again. Her husband Richard Rympeit said she was given a pain relief pill, but it did little to alleviate her discomfort. At around 6 pm, while in the hospital restroom, she unexpectedly went into labour and delivered the baby there.

The state’s health department has not yet commented on the incident. Meanwhile, members of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) have blamed the hospital administration, accusing it of negligence. The health department’s response is still awaited.
