New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea by the West Bengal government challenging the bail granted to student leader Sayan Lahiri, who was arrested in connection with protests over the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

A bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra dismissed the plea of the West Bengal government, saying that prima facie a case for grant of bail was made out in the case.

High Court granted bail to Lahiri on Friday

The High Court granted Paschim Banga Chhtra Samaj leader Sayan Lahiri, who was arrested on August 27 in connection with protests over the rape and murder of woman doctor, bail on Friday. The High Court directed the release of Lahiri from police custody by 2 PM on Saturday while hearing a plea by Lahiri’s mother seeking quashing of proceedings against her son and grant of bail to him in the case.

Aggrieved by the order of the High Court, the State of West Bengal had moved the Supreme Court.

Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj was one of the two organisations giving the call for the August 27 ‘Nabanna Abhijan’. According to police, Lahiri played an active role in the protests, which turned violent and caused destruction of public and private property and attacks on police officers.

31-year-old woman doctor was raped, murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9

A 31-year-old postgraduate doctor, who was on a thirty six hour duty shift, was murdered and allegedly raped inside the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. Agitations and protests were called by doctors’ associations, student bodies and civic groups across the country following the incident at the hospital.

Calcutta High Court transferred probe of rape, murder of woman doctor to CBI

The Calcutta High Court, while hearing a bunch of pleas seeking a court-monitored investigation of the rape and murder of the woman doctor and the conduct of the hospital authorities, transferred the probe of the incident to the CBI.

The Supreme Court has taken a suo motu cognisance of the incident and is currently seized of the matter.
