Jabalpur Administration Cracks Down on Fee Hike Irregularities in MP Schools: 20 Arrested

In a significant move against unauthorized fee hikes by private schools in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, the local administration has arrested 20 individuals from 11 private schools, with more arrests expected. These schools were found to have increased fees in violation of regulations and pressured parents to buy school books exclusively from designated shops.

In a joint press conference held at the Collector’s office, Jabalpur Collector Deepak Saxena and Superintendent of Police Aditya Pratap Singh shared the details of the investigation. Collector Saxena reported that after receiving numerous complaints from parents, the administration launched an inquiry into the fee structures and book pricing practices of private schools and the associated Prakash Company. The investigation revealed significant irregularities, including a collusion between school management and publishers to charge exorbitant fees and book prices.

“The nexus between school managements and book publishers was uncovered, leading to excessive charges imposed on parents,” stated Collector Saxena. Following the investigation, actions were taken against 11 schools, with many more under scrutiny. The administration has fined each of the 11 schools Rs 2 lakh and ordered them to refund the increased fees to parents. Failure to comply will result in the confiscation of school properties to ensure refunds are made.

Collector Saxena emphasized the administration’s clear objectives and adherence to government instructions. “We meticulously reviewed school regulations, collaborated with the school education department, and engaged with parents to identify irregularities. The findings from 11 schools were alarming, revealing unauthorized fee collections totaling Rs 81 crore 30 lakh,” he explained. Alongside the refund order, a fine of Rs 22 lakh was imposed.

The investigation also exposed deceitful practices by the schools, including the inclusion of unnecessary books and those with fake ISBNs, allowing them to levy substantial commissions on book sales. The administration’s decisive actions underscore its commitment to ensuring fair practices in the education sector and protecting parents from exploitative charges.
